Explore Trim, Gasket, and Weatherstripping

When it comes to protecting the edge of a manufactured product or creating a weather-tight seal for a door or window, Austin Hardware has several products that are up for the job. We carry a wide variety of trim, gasket, and weatherstrip to meet any project’s needs. Whether you’re looking to install a decorative edge trim or create a weather-resistant seal, we have a quality assured solution for you.

There is some ambiguous language surrounding trims, seals, and weatherstrip that we hope to clear up, but it’s key to note that they generally fulfill similar functions—including to fill gaps between two surfaces. Separate suppliers may call one product different names, and many times, the name will overlap. We have a helpful blog post that delves further into the topic, but we will also provide a brief breakdown of the different types.

Weatherstrip

A quick Google search for “weatherstrip” (or “weather strip,” as it is sometimes called) yields a wide range of results. However, we generally see the term weatherstrip used to refer to a specific part or strip of material used to cover the joint of a door or window and prevent water, snow, and cold air from getting inside.

We carry a range of different products to get this job done including self-sealing options, adhesives, and various sizes to fit your needs. Weatherproof trims are a preferred choice in automotive, marine, and transportation for their reliability and finished look:

  • A necessary tool in Automotive and Transportation for any areas where the interior of a vehicle needs to be sealed off from the outside environment (Car windows, doors, etc.).
  • In Marine it keeps water, air, and other external environment hazards out of the marine vessel. Used in fuel tanks, windows, fuel rooms, etc.
  • Seal off doors and windows in countless settings—homes, industrial and commercial buildings, etc.

TRIM

Trim is a versatile product that comes in different versions and materials and can have many end uses. As the name suggests, trim is generally used to cover rough edges. Edge trim—or an edge guard—is designed to protect edges from damage, protect users from injury due to exposed sharp materials, or even enhance the aesthetics of a product. These come in different materials, such as rubber, leather, and plastic, and have vast industry applications.

  • Door edge guards, vehicle seats, decorative and safety-enhancing finishes
  • Machine windows and guards, equipment, and equipment cabinets
  • Construction and manufacturing
  • Cover sharp edges of plastic, metal, and glass for any project

Gaskets

Gaskets are seals specifically engineered to prevent leaks of substances like liquids, gasses and chemicals between stationary parts—whereas seals are usually used on moving parts. Gaskets are the ultimate solution to connect two surfaces together, create a buffer against metal-on-metal, or even block out extraneous noise. They are often made with non-reactive and stable materials like rubber or another felxible matieral, so they are excellent for sealing areas that face harsh conditions, including ozine, sunlight, and severe weather conditions.

What Makes Quality Weatherstripping

Quality weatherstripping looks different based on what the application is. Evaluate these factors when selecting a quality weatherstrip product for your project.

Material

Weatherstripping comes in many different materials, including vinyl, metal, rubber, and silicone. Look for high-quality materials that you can count on—rubber is often a solid choice, because it is resistant to wear and and extreme temperatures.

Climate & Environmental Factors

A quality weathertrip will be engineered to withstand the relevant environmental factors like rain, high winds, or extreme humidity.

Durability

It is vital to choose a robust product that will hold up regardless of wear and tear. Consider the location of the weatherstrippping—high-traffic areas may require extra reinforcement and heavy duty materials.

Appearance

Weatherstrip should blend seamlessly with its surroundings and would ideally give an aesthetically pleasing finish.

Choosing the Right Part

Check and Double Check Dimensions

Though it may seem obvious, it is vital to consult the product description, pictures, or a sales representative to ensure you are getting the right dimensions needed for your project. Without a proper fit, the seal and end results will be poor—and potentially costly or unsafe.

Check Material for Your Application

Evaluate whether the product’s material is appropriate for your project. Different materials have different benefits and features based on many variables.

Evaluate Relevant Certifications

To ensure the appropriate safety standard is met, check whether the product is EL certified. Luckily, Austin Hardware has a large inventory of UL certified products for you to choose from.

Consult a Sales Representative or Expert

Our team of experienced sales reps is always on standby to help you with any questions about selecting the proper product. Our team members will guide you through your different options and provide you with an excellent choice for your application.
