Safety lights on the back and side of trailers

Dot Lighting

DOT lights are purpose-driven and meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards set by the United States Department of Transportation (DOT). The lighting on vehicles and some equipment must meet strict government standards in order to keep the public safe. For example, trailers over 80 inches wide operating on public roads must have front and rear clearance lights that are DOT-approved. These lights and reflectors allow other drivers to easily see the trailer even in low light.

Austin Hardware carries a wide range of DOT lights to meet your needs, including various shapes and colors of side markers, tail lights, and surface mounts. These can be used for emergency vehicles, trailers, trucks, RVs, and more.

Area lighting

Area lighting casts directional light rays in a rectangle or circular manner in order to illuminate a set area. There are no specific standards set on this type of light—the only purpose is general illumination of an area. For example, a fluorescent dock light illuminates the space on a dock for crew member and passenger convenience.

Area lights can be used outdoors to reduce shadows and illuminate large areas. Additionally, they are often used as work truck spotlights that illuminate a work area. Our selection of area lighting includes options such as spot lamps, warning lights, strip lighting, and many more applications:

  • Emergency Response Vehicles - Lighting options include scene lighting so responders can work safely and efficiently and warning lights to notify others of the approach of an emergency vehicle
  • Work Trucks - These specialized vehicles require unique lighting solutions, which can include work lights that can be mounted to the vehicle, warning lights, clearance lamps, and stop, turn, and tail lights.
  • Trailers and Work Trucks - These trucks need special work lights to illuminate the scene of a job, warning lights, clearance lamps, and stop, turn, and tail lights.
  • Marine - Enhance safety of boating experiences with the use of area lights like deck lights and work lights, navigation lights like sidelights and masthead lights, or spreader lighting for better visibility when parking.

Lighting solutions for key industries

Lights on the back of trailer

Trailers

Both vehicles and trailers have requirements like DOT taillights, brake lights, and signal lights. However, trailers have unique lighting requirements that are distinct from ordinary cars and trucks. For example, trailers under 80 inches wide must have amber side marker lights at the front and red in the back, along with corresponding reflectors–which cars typically do not require unless they are commercial. Additionally, clearance and identification lights are required for trailers.
