What are Gas Springs?

A gas spring, also referred to as a gas strut or gas damper, is a key device you will find all around you in your daily life. Often used in doors, it is a type of spring that uses compressed gas to help facilitate movement and provide support for parts in automotive vehicles, medical equipment, electronics, and more.

Ultimately, they are important tools when it comes to improving the safety and functionality of endless applications.

How do Gas Springs Work?

Like any spring, a gas spring is a mechanism designed to store potential energy. However, gas springs use pressurized gas to store energy, while mechanical springs use physical deformation.

A gas spring works by compressing gas, usually nitrogen, within a cylinder. The spring works by using this compressed gas to maneuver two parts, 1) a piston rod and 2) a cylinder. This gas compression creates a strong force that is proportional to an increase in pressure as the two mechanisms work together. The result is a strong force—so even a small gas spring demonstrates impressive strength.

Gas springs are used all the time in everyday items to make equipment functional and easier to use. You have gas springs to thank for supporting the weight of your car trunk door when you have it open and letting you move your office seat up and down with ease.

Choosing the Right Gas Spring for your Application

Gas springs come in a wide variety that fit different kinds of projects. It is important to consider the following factors when deciding what gas spring you need for your application:

  • Weight of the door or lid you wish to support
  • Length of your lid or door.
  • How far you want the door to open (45°, 60°, 90°, etc.)
  • Mounting Location: In order to achieve your desired handle efforts, it is vital to choose the appropriate mounting location for the gas spring. You will want to choose a mounting location that a) provides torque values for optimal opening motion, and b) allows the lid or door to completely close.
  • Materials: To maximize the life of your equipment, choose a gas spring made with durable materials like composite and metal. For instance, stainless steel is a sturdy option, with some types more resistant to corrosion than others.
